When do I need to get a roadworthy certificate?
You need a roadworthy certificate to sell any car, motorbike, trailer and any other vehicle up to 4,500kg gross vehicle mass.
- To transfer registration to a new owner
- To transfer registration to Queensland registration from another state.
- When re-registering an unregistered vehicle
Vehicles requiring a roadworthy certificate include
- cars
- motorcycles
- trailers (including caravans) with an aggregate trailer mass (ATM) between 750kg and 3,500kg
- any other vehicles up to 4,500kg gross vehicle mass (GVM).
The roadworthy inspections that we perform covers the basic vehicle safety standards including

The roadworthy inspection process
At the conclusion of the roadworthy inspection, a written certificate will be issued to you by one of our team members. If the vehicle fails the roadworthy inspection, we will give you a quote on how much it will cost to get the vehicle up to scratch. Queensland Transport allows owners 14 days after roadworthy certificates are issued to rectify any problems identified and to have the vehicle reinspected.
